Salmon Spawning

There are several spots along the Fraser and its tributaries to watch the large Chinook salmon on their 1300 km journey from ocean to spawning grounds in August. Be alert for bears and keep well away from them.

Beaver River Falls: 11 km east of McBride up the Holmes River trail. Access is at the trailhead on the west side of the Holmes River bridge. A 1.1 km walk takes you to the Falls. In some years bright red and green sockeye salmon are also seen in the pools below the falls.

Tete Jaune spawning grounds: From Tete Jaune, turn south onto Blackman Road and south again onto Old Tete Jaune road (paved). Shortly after the level railway crossing is a sign pointing you to the trail to the spawning grounds in the clear water of the Fraser River. Rearguard Falls: Parking lot on the right side of the road 5 km east of the Tete Jaune junction of Hwys 5 and 16 (towards Mount Robson). A short walk brings you to the falls, where you may see the large fish leaping from the water. The area is fenced for your safety, please stay within the boundaries.
